Are you ready to be Grandparents?
Being a parent can either be a rewarding and fulfilling experience or a total nightmare - depending on the type of person you are and whether the event is a planned family decision or an unexpected intrusion into one's life. Bringing a child into the world and rearing them to the best of your ability is an ongoing commitment and one that never really ends even when they are grown and leave the nest. At some time down the line the most rewarding and enjoyable part of being a parent comes into play with the arrival of the "grandchildren".
You are now able to appreciate the wonders of seeing the world through a child's eye without the day-to-day responsibility, the uncertainty of wondering whether you are doing things right, or teaching them right from wrong. Now you have more time and patience - any crisis that arises can be dealt with calmly and quickly. That is not to say you are not prone to some anxiety when left in sole charge of the little darlings while their Mum and Dad go off for a well earned break. One of my overriding fears is that some harm will come to them while in my charge. What will I tell the parents? Will I be able to live with myself? Of course, these fears are unfounded but they surface nevertheless.
Being a grandparent is one of the most enjoyable, rewarding and satisfying roles that many parents look forward to,and welcome, with open arms - literally in the knowledge that the family line is continuing despite all the obstacles faced in the past.
